Pope Leo (Fr Robert Prevost) visit to St Augustine's
13 May 2025Until January 2006, St Augustine’s Parish was run by the Augustinian Order. As a part of the order Kyabram's St Augustine's parish was very privileged to have been visited by the now Pope Leo, Fr Robert Prevost. On Saturday 10 December 2005, Fr Robert Prevost the then Prior General (Pope Leo) arrived at Tullamarine (Qantas Flight 617, 2.55pm) and was collected by Fr Dave Austin. They then drove to the Cathedral in Bendigo where the Augustinian story began with Bishop Crane back in 1874. As Fr Dave recalls, "we met Fr Frank Marriott in the presbytery afterwards. We then drove to Rochester and had a look at the church, particularly the stained glass windows of Augustinian saints, then drove on to Kyabram". On Sunday 11 December the Prior General celebrated Mass for the Parish in Kyabram. Later in the day, Fr Dave drove him to Echuca to see the Church and Priory. Monday 12 December 2005 – The Prior General attended a Clergy Christmas Lunch and met Bishop Joe Grech and the priests of the diocese. After lunch Fr Dave then drove him to South Yarra.
The Parish has found a photo album in the archives with several photos of Fr Robert Prevost celebrating Mass in St Augustine's church. Call into the office if you would like to have a look.
